As NASCAR and auto racing’s greatest presence in Arizona and the American Southwest, Phoenix International Raceway recognizes its prominent position and responsibilities as a good corporate citizen. With that in mind, PIR has a number of philanthropic programs designed to give back and make its overall community a better place.
Phoenix International Raceway has several cornerstone programs in place throughout the calendar year:
PIR Pairs With Make-A-Wish Foundation
As a part of its ongoing commitment to the community, Phoenix International Raceway continues to work closely with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Arizona and the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America. For each major NASCAR event at PIR, PIR entirely sponsors a full slate of activities for one "wish kid" family in addition to coordinating activities - such as meeting with top NASCAR drivers and taking in PIR's great racing action - for all of the "wish kid" families in attendance at the facility.
PIR coordinates a full guest services effort and works with escorts from the Make-A-Wish® Foundation to ensure that the needs of the families are met for everything from taking a garage tour to watching the exciting racing on the track.
Kyle Petty’s Victory Invitational
Kyle Petty's Victory Invitational Celebrity Golf Tournament will again steer NASCAR onto the golf links of Phoenix in 2009 to benefit charity - but with a twist. This year, Kyle Petty's Victory Invitational will take place as part of the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 event week at Phoenix International Raceway.
After raising $335,000 for Victory Junction and the Arizona State University College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation through the inaugural event in the spring of 2008, Kyle Petty's Victory Invitational moves to the fall in 2009 and is scheduled to take place at Kierland Golf Club on Thursday, November 12, in line with that weekend's Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil at PIR, the Semi-Final Race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Proceeds from the tournament and surrounding events will help support ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses, support for their families, and contribute to the ongoing training for the professionals who treat them.
For more information about Kyle Petty’s Victory Invitational Celebrity Golf Tournament, please contact Kristie Maggs of Phoenix International Raceway at (623) 463-5400 or at kmaggs@phoenixinternationalraceway.com. Interested sponsors may reach Jon Sata at the same phone number or at jsata@phoenixinternationalraceway.com.
Jimmie Johnson Foundation
The partnership between the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and Phoenix International Raceway reached its second year in 2009 and includes the charitable entitlement of a NASCAR Camping World Series West race as the Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 Presented by Shamrock Farms, as well as a charitable fundraiser in the track’s luxury lounge, Octane - “Night of Champions.” The Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 Presented by Shamrock Farms is scheduled as the first of three races during the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ event weekend, with the Night of Champions occurring concurrently in Octane.
The Jimmie Johnson Foundation - created by Johnson and his wife, Chandra - is dedicated to assisting children, families, and communities in need. The foundation strives to help everyone, particularly children, pursue their dreams. The partner programs for the Jimmie Johnson Foundation include San Diego Habitat for Humanity, the Hendrick Marrow Program, the Victory Junction Gang Camp, and Phoenix-based Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.
In partnership with Phoenix International Raceway, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation has designated the West Valley Child Crisis Center as its local charity of choice. The WVCCC’s mission is to provide a safe place where children are comfortable and loved, and given a chance to heal before being placed in a foster home, restored with their parent(s), or with a relative that the State deems able to provide decent care.
