Fast Facts: Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil

• The Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil marks the 20th anniversary of the first Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, won by Alan Kulwicki on November 6, 1988.

• No driver in PIR's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history has won three consecutive races. Following his win in last year's Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 and a win in April's SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™ at PIR, Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet) will bid to be the first. A win would make him the second competitor in the history of NASCAR’s three premier series at PIR to win three consecutive races. Jack Sprague won three in a row in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series between 1996 and 1997.

• Four drivers in addition to Johnson have won multiple Sprint Cup races at Phoenix International Raceway, and all four drivers won their two races in succession. Davey Allison pulled a double between 1991 and 1992, Jeff Burton (No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet) won in 2000 and 2001, Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 88 AMP Energy Drink Chevrolet) won in 2003 and 2004, and Kevin Harvick (No. 29 Shell Pennzoil Chevrolet) swept the Cup slate in the Valley of the Sun in 2006.

• Sprint Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. will join host Jeff Dean of XTRA 910 AM's "Game On with Jeff Dean" on Wednesday, November 5. The interview is scheduled to begin at approximately 5:05 p.m. MST.

• Jack in the Box has signed on as Qualifying Day sponsor for the Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole qualifying session and the Craftsman Truck Series Keystone Light Pole qualifying session on Friday. This is the first NASCAR affiliation for the West Coast fast food company.

For $95, ticket purchasers will receive one (1) grandstand ticket to the race, admission to Corporate Village (including food and drink), and a Craftsman Truck Series pre-race pit pass to be used that day. Ticket package purchasers will be treated to a question-and-answer session with KHI Nationwide Series driver Cale Gale and KHI Craftsman Truck Series driver Ron Hornaday Jr., who will drive his VFW-themed No. 33 Chevrolet in Friday evening's race. The shirt and program will be officially unveiled to the media on Friday at 2:00 p.m., and Speed will appear at PIR's Raceway Club at 12:15 p.m. Sunday to meet with fans and discuss the charity T-shirt program with CCFA representatives.

• After much success in recent years, the PIR Park 'N Ride program returns to Cricket Pavilion, located just two blocks north of I-10 on 83rd Avenue. All NASCAR fans heading to PIR are welcome to enter at the 83rd Avenue entrance and park on Pavilion grounds, from where shuttle bus service from First Student Charter (formerly Laidlaw Transportation) of Phoenix will be provided to the Gate 7 area at the track. Parking and shuttle services to PIR will total just $7 per carload, and the Park 'N Ride will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

• PIR has unveiled a special edition "Stars and Stripes" hat for sale

through the event weekend and while supplies last. The hat – navy blue with a red, white, and blue Phoenix International Raceway logo – will sell for $30, with proceeds going to assist the Salute to Military Families program at the April 2009 SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™. One lucky hat wearer at PIR during the weekend will be selected to ride in the patriotically-themed PIR pace car to open Sunday's Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500. The hat will be available for purchase at the PIR Season Ticket display located near Gate 3 on the Midway.

• Rock and roll artist Wes Freed – designer of a limited-edition Giclée print promoting NASCAR's Semi-Final weekend at PIR – will appear for a signing of the print at PIR's Raceway Club on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. A version of Freed's work for PIR can be seen here.

• Who said a motor and four wheels were needed to race the oval at PIR? A group of cyclists from the Road 2 Recovery bicycle program will participate in pre-race ceremonies for the Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil. Road 2 Recovery, a group committed to raising awareness for wounded military members, will make a lap around PIR's one-mile oval and meet representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for a check presentation during pre-race ceremonies on Sunday.

More information on Road 2 Recovery can be found at www.r2rriders.com.

• Ever wonder about the efforts of local authorities in preparing for an event with the magnitude of the NASCAR's Semi-Final Race? Here are some numbers from the Maricopa County Department of Transportation to put everything in perspective.

MCDOT will use 4000 traffic cones, 600 barricades, 600 traffic signs, and a total of 10 barricade trucks to properly move traffic in and out of PIR over the weekend. The cones aren’t just put out once, either. Officials will place cones down on Saturday before the Hefty Odor Block 200, and then pick them up to account for normal traffic when the race begins. After the race, the cones go down again to help the outbound traffic flow, and then it’s back to normal routing on Saturday night. The cone procedure is repeated for a third and fourth time for Sunday's Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil.

In all, over 80 people from MCDOT will focus their efforts on traffic logistics for PIR's NASCAR event weekend.

Race fans can call 511 at any time throughout the weekend to get the latest updates on local traffic reports. Information can also be found on the Web at www.az511.gov.
