Martin Wins First Phoenix Pole

Driver earns third top spot of 2009

Look out for No. 5 up front in Saturday's SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500™.

Mark Martin scored his first pole in 28 NASCAR national series starts at Phoenix International Raceway with a lap of 26.903 seconds (133.814 mph) during Sprint Cup Series qualifying Friday afternoon, outdoing the 26.921-second circuit turned by front row neighbor Kyle Busch.

The pole was Martin’s third of the season. His previous high start in Sprint Cup Series action in Phoenix was third, which occurred twice – in 1991 and 1993.

Kurt Busch joins his brother in the top three, and Jeff Gordon will start alongside Busch on the outside of the second row. Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart, Paul Menard, David Reutimann, Regan Smith, and three-time defending Phoenix International Raceway winner Jimmie Johnson comprise the remainder of the top 10.

The 39-year-old from Bakersfield, Calif. scored a victory in his fourth consecutive race in the same professional series at the legendary one-mile oval in the Arizona desert, leading 224 of 312 laps to win the CampingWorld.com 500.

    PARDO LEADS HO SPEED RACING TO 1, 2, 3 SWEEP IN TOYOTA 120

    Ruben Pardo earned his first NASCAR Mexico Series win at Phoenix International Raceway in the Toyota 120 on Friday. After starting on the pole, Pardo fell as low as 12th but fought back to the front in the late stages.
