Phoenix’s McDowell and PIR Team Up
Track to sponsor hometown driver’s No. 47 car on Friday night
Hey, that’s a familiar logo! Phoenix International Raceway will sponsor NASCAR Nationwide Series driver and Phoenix native Michael McDowell for the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 on April 17. The hometown driver’s No. 47 car will feature a number of items unique to PIR’s “Semifinal Week” in the Chase for the Sprint Cup - which is centered around the November 15 Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 - for the nationally-televised race, which starts at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2. “It’s always great to come back to Phoenix - all of my family and my wife’s family are still here,” McDowell said. “To have Phoenix International Raceway on board with the car makes this trip home even more special. It really means a lot to me to have the hometown support.” Driving for JTG-Daugherty Racing, McDowell currently sits 13th in the Nationwide Series point standings following a 15th-place finish at Nashville. He led his first laps in series competition at Nashville. “We are incredibly proud of Michael as a driver from the Phoenix area and as a great young man,” said Phoenix International Raceway president Bryan R. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has officially declared Phoenix International Raceway as “ZOOMTOWN, U.S.A.™” for the NASCAR event weekend of April 16-18. PIR will again become “ZOOMTOWN, U.S.A.™” November 12-15 when the raceway hosts USAC, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events on successive days. Kyle Petty's Victory Invitational Celebrity Golf Tournament will again steer NASCAR onto the golf links of Phoenix in 2009 to benefit charity - but with a twist. This year, Kyle Petty's Victory Invitational will take place as part of the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 week at PIR. Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stars will appear at Phoenix Raceway for the first time in 2017 when the track hosts an open test session on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Phoenix Raceway will open its gates to fans from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with general seating in the Bobby Allison Grandstand. Free parking is available and fans are asked to make a $5 donation to Phoenix Raceway Charities for admission.
Joey Logano needed a good finish to advance to the championship finale of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series next weekend. The semi-final race was extended by 12 laps due to two late collisions that significantly effected both the race and the championship battle. Logano got the best finish possible at Sunday's Can-Am 500, grabbing the lead on a late restart and never looking back.
Another NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, another win for Kyle Busch. The driver of the No. 18 NOS Energy Toyota dominated yet again in Saturday's Ticket Galaxy 200 for his 10th win at PIR, a track record for a single series. Busch led 190 of 200 laps, the fourth-consecutive XFINITY race at Phoenix where he has led at least 175 of the 200 laps. But even though he lost the lead on the final restart to Justin Allgaier, Busch wasn't worried about the outcome.
