Kyle Busch Wins Casino Arizona 150; Edwards Takes Sunday Pole
Friday, November 9, 2007

Young driver adds to strong PIR resume

Kyle Busch led the final 42 laps of Friday's Casino Arizona 150 at Phoenix International Raceway, notching his second NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory of 2007 and the sixth of his 35-start career.

Busch and the No. 51 Billy Ballew Chevrolet survived a battle of attrition that saw a track record 13 cautions and two red flags, which in total slowed the race for 46 laps. The stoppages lasted for a combined 21 minutes and 52 seconds.

The problems began early when David Starr and Brian Scott collided in the third turn of Lap 4. They didn't end until a dozen yellow flags later when a debris caution from Laps 142-144 created a six-lap shootout to the finish, one which saw Busch hold off championship contender Ron Hornaday Jr. and Mike Bliss for the win. Jason Leffler finished fourth and Kevin Harvick was fifth.

"It's a privilege to drive this truck," Busch said. "It really means the world to me, and I hope that we can do it again next year."

With his runner-up finish and the eighth-place run of Mike Skinner, Hornaday closed Skinner's championship lead from 57 to 29 points heading into next weekend's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The trucks under the lights didn't create the only action at PIR on Friday. Carl Edwards turned a lap of 27.114 seconds (132.773 mph) in the afternoon qualifying session for Sunday's Checker Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil to edge Martin Truex Jr. by 0.003 seconds for his first pole of 2007. Jeff Gordon qualified third and will start three spots in front of championship leader Jimmie Johnson.

J.J. Yeley will start fourth and Johnny Sauter will line up fifth on the grid.

Tickets still remain for Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series ARIZONA.TRAVEL 200 and hillside tickets are still available for Sunday's Checker Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil. Saturday's action starts at 2 p.m., and the pre-race ceremonies on Sunday begin at 1 p.m.
